“Banco de Tempo” (Benches of Time)
Installation and exhibition

Banco de Tempo is a site-specific public art installation on the parkgrounds of Museu da República, and a related exhibition at Galeria do Lago in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In collaboration with Patricia Gouvêa.

The urban intervention uses text embedded in an urban context to explore notions of spatial flows, time and desire for time. Throughout the entire park, we proposed a wandering reading experience that encourages visitors to explore new paths as they read an expanded text spread over several park benches.

The texts are derived from a series of interviews and conversations with park visitors about their use of and desire for spending time. Each verse on each bench is the visitors’ responses to the question: “what would you desire to do if you had more hours to spend each day?”

Read the collective text “Desejo de Horas/Desire for Hours”

The installation continues inside the gallery space, where each piece relates to the artists’ experience of the park and its history.

Inspired by a archive photograph of a Brazilian ex-president posing in the same park with his dogs one century earlier, we spent one year photographing park benches around the world that reveal different placements and uses for benches globally.

In addition, three video pieces reflect ways in which we spent time in this park in dialogue with its landscape by walking, reading or weathering a storm.
